The "Clair" senses are intuitive abilities that allow us to tap into guidance and pick up psychic messages that go beyond the five basic senses. Whether you’re connecting with someone’s Energy on a psychic level or working in mediumship to communicate with those who’ve passed, these eight Clair senses help translate intuitive information into helpful insights.
Here’s a guide to each Clair sense and how you can start recognising and strengthening them.
The Eight Clair Senses
Clairvoyance (seeing)
Clairaudience (hearing)
Claircognizance (knowing)
Clairempathy (emotional feeling)
Clairsentience (physical feeling)
Clairtangency (touching)
Clairalience (smelling)
Clairgustance (tasting)
Clairvoyance (Seeing)
Clairvoyance is the ability to “see” images, colours, or symbols in your mind, often appearing like fleeting mental snapshots rather than physical sights. In a client session with me you might notice that I tend to look away or focus around the room - that’s because images or colours are coming through in my mind’s eye, providing guidance.
To develop Clairvoyance:
Close your eyes and visualise a memory or place.
Practice holding onto that image for longer periods.
Try to notice any patterns or symbols that come up repeatedly in meditations or readings.
Example: That flash of light or shadow just outside of your peripheral vision will be someone trying to get your attention.
Clairaudience (Hearing)
Clairaudience involves hearing messages, words or sounds that don’t have a physical source. These can be songs, random words or even clear guidance that pops into your mind unexpectedly. Music is especially common as a form of clairaudient guidance.
To develop Clairaudience:
Pay attention to songs or phrases that randomly come to mind. It could be your voice in your head or one you don't recognise.
Reflect on the lyrics or the memory associated with the music to see if there’s a message.
Quiet environments or listening exercises can help amplify this sense.
Example: I had a powerful experience with Clairaudience at 19 yo when a voice told me to “STOP” while driving, saving me from a major car accident. It was a pivotal moment that strengthened my trust in this ability.
Claircognizance (Knowing)
Claircognizance is that “gut feeling” or sudden knowing. It’s when you just know something without evidence or reasoning. Trust is essential here, as self-doubt can often get in the way of the clarity you’re receiving.
To develop Claircognizance:
Practice trusting your gut feelings in low-stakes situations.
Journal moments when your “knowing” was right, to strengthen your confidence.
Express gratitude when you experience accurate claircognizance, as acknowledging it helps more of these messages come through.
Example: Even if you don't realise that your Clairconizance was correct until well after you had the feeling of "knowing", let your gratefulness shine! You will get better & better at connecting the dots that The Universe is sending to you. Sometimes you have to look backwards at your experiences with Spirit to work out the easiest and clearest way forward with your future intuitive interludes.
Clairempathy (Emotional Feeling)
Clairempathy is the ability to pick up on others’ emotions as if they are your own. Many people with Clairempathy feel someone else’s happiness or sadness deeply, even without being told what’s happening.
To develop Clairempathy:
Notice how you feel in the presence of others, especially if your emotions shift suddenly.
Practice Energy filtering techniques (visualise your own internal light shining brightly) to help decipher which emotions are yours and prevent overwhelm from the intense feelings of others.
Pay attention to public spaces where emotions are high - cafés, events, etc. - and allow yourself to observe what feelings you pick up on that aren't yours.
Example: I once felt a stranger’s sadness in a café, leading me to comfort her after she received upsetting news. This experience helped me realise how Clairempathy could guide me to help others in real-time.
Clairsentience (Physical Feeling)
Clairsentience is about physically feeling what someone else is experiencing. You might suddenly feel a pain or sensation in your body that doesn’t belong to you but resonates with someone nearby.
To develop Clairsentience:
Take note of any physical sensations that arise suddenly, especially if they disappear when someone leaves the room or you stop thinking about that person.
Voice what you’re feeling to others - often, it will resonate with them and give you the confirmation that you need.
When you identify that a sensation isn’t yours, ask your Guides (or what-ever-the-fuck-you-believe-in) to remove it after acknowledging the message.
Example: I sometimes feel clients’ physical symptoms during sessions, which helps validate the connection and shows me where healing is needed.
Clairtangency (Touching)
Clairtangency, or psychometry, is when you receive information by touching objects or feeling a “touch” from spirit. This sense can reveal details about a person’s experiences or memories through physical sensations.
To develop Clairtangency:
Practice holding meaningful objects and note any thoughts or sensations that arise.
Pay attention to sensations on your skin, like a light touch, especially in situations that feel spiritually heightened.
Honour these feelings, even if they feel subtle or hard to describe initially.
Example: I will often feel the back of my hand stroked lovingly if I am being made aware of a client who has sat with a loved one at the end of their life.
Clairsalience (Smelling)
Clairsalience is the ability to smell scents that aren’t physically present, like a loved one’s perfume, flowers or even smoke, to bring a memory or message to mind.
To develop Clairsalience:
Note any unusual scents that pop up randomly, particularly in meaningful locations.
Think about what the scent reminds you of or whom it’s associated with.
Don’t dismiss these scents — trust they’re there to bring attention to something meaningful.
Example: The familiar scent of a passed loved one can give you the reassurance of their continued connection with you.
Clairgustance (Tasting)
Clairgustance is when you taste something that isn’t there, often a familiar flavour connected to a passed loved one or memory. It’s a subtle but vivid way for spirit to communicate.
To develop Clairgustance:
Notice any distinct tastes that come out of nowhere and try to identify what they remind you of.
Consider the memories or feelings associated with the taste — does it bring anyone or any event to mind?
The more you recognise this ability, the more often it will show up when you’re open to receiving.
Example: I was once contacted by a grandson in Spirit who 'made me taste' that his Grandmother's spaghetti sauce had a special secret ingredient which was the confirmation she needed to be sure that it was him and he still attended family gatherings.
Honing Your Clair Senses
Most people naturally use one or two of the Clair senses without realising it. As you develop one, you may notice the others becoming more prominent. Our Angels and Guides often start with the Clair that feels most natural for us and as we recognise it and become more confident with it, they introduce more.
Tips to Strengthen Your Clairs:
Practice Gratitude - Acknowledge each message or sensation to encourage more. Try not to doubt yourself if you don't realise it was a message until afterwards.
Journal - Keep a record of your experiences to see patterns and build confidence. This is especially helpful at the beginning of your intuitive growth.
Stay Open and Curious - Each Clair sense may develop in its own time. Stay flexible in how messages come through. Observation without force is the key!
Learning to trust your Clair senses is like building a muscle: it takes time and practice. These abilities are your own psychic “superpowers”, so embrace them, experiment and enjoy the journey.
