When I first started doing readings and healings, self-doubt was a constant companion. Every client who came to see me triggered a wave of internal pleading: Please let me get something for them; please don’t let me mess this up.
Even after many positive sessions and happy clients, the fear would creep in each time, whispering that this might be the session where Spirit would go silent or I’d draw a blank.
It took time, practice and a good few pep talks with myself to let go of that fear and truly trust in Spirit’s guidance. If you’re feeling that same doubt in your work, I want to share how I moved through it and learned to trust that Spirit always has my back - even when my confidence wavers.
Doubting Spirit (Instead of Myself)
For a long time I assumed my nerves were about doubting myself - thinking that I wasn’t “good enough” or skilled enough to help people. But over time I realised that my fear was actually rooted in doubting Spirit. I was afraid that Spirit wouldn’t show up or that I’d somehow be left hanging without any insight to share.
That was a huge realisation for me and honestly, a bit of a shock. When I reframed it as doubting Spirit rather than doubting myself, it hit me hard. It felt like I was questioning whether Spirit would really come through for me and that just felt wrong. It helped me shift my perspective.
My job, I realised, was to show up, stay open and let Spirit handle the rest. Once I took myself out of the equation and remembered my only role was to pass on the messages I received, the pressure lifted and I felt more confident in my sessions.
Learning to Surrender and Listen
In the early days, I was so worried about “performing” that I missed the subtle messages Spirit was sending. I expected messages to come through like a loud, clear voice or a flashing sign, but most of the time, it doesn’t work like that. Spirit communicates in whispers, nudges and very subtle sensations. It’s like piecing together a puzzle - one word, image or feeling at a time.
Once I let go of the need for messages to come through in a particular way, I started to notice the enormous value in those quieter hints. I’d see a flash of an image or feel a sensation and I learned to trust that these were valid messages too, even if they didn’t make immediate sense to me.
By giving myself permission to share what I was seeing, hearing or feeling - even if it felt strange - I found that the messages were exactly what my clients needed to hear.
Releasing Control (and Letting Spirit Lead)
In this work, there’s no room for control. That was a big one for me, because I’m naturally someone who likes to know what’s coming. But the nature of Spirit is fluid and the messages don’t always come through in a neat, predictable way. Learning to release that need for control has been one of the biggest lessons.
I had to get comfortable with sharing messages that I didn’t fully understand myself, knowing that they weren’t for me to interpret - they were for the client. I learned to see myself as a messenger, not the source. That shift has been incredibly freeing. When I stopped worrying about understanding everything myself, I found that Spirit could work through me more freely and the sessions became more powerful.
Embracing Confirmation from Spirit
Over the years, I’ve learned that Spirit has its own way of confirming messages and those little signs have been such a gift in building my confidence. Some people call them “confirmation tingles” or goosebumps. For me, I get a good old-fashioned “confirmation burp.” It sounds bizarre, but I’ve come to rely on it as a clear sign from Spirit that I’m on the right track!
These unique forms of confirmation have taught me to pay attention to my own body and Energy as I work. Our bodies can be wonderful channels for Spirit to let us know when we’re aligned and I always encourage other healers to notice what subtle signs come up for them. They can be powerful tools in helping you trust that you’re receiving messages correctly.
Trusting Spirit (and Letting Go of Self-Doubt)
Today, I can walk into a session and know that Spirit will show up, whether or not I feel 100% confident in myself that day.
I’m no longer caught up in the worry of “What if nothing comes through?” because I know it’s not about me - it’s about being present, open and ready to receive. By letting go of that pressure, I can stay more grounded and focused on my clients’ needs, rather than my own fears.
If you’re a healer, reader or Energy worker struggling with self-doubt, know this: your job is simply to show up, stay open and trust that Spirit will handle the rest. The more you practice letting go, the easier it gets to trust in Spirit’s guidance and let go of the pressure to perform.
